British and American Garages

A residential garage is an additional enclosed building designed for storing cars. It is an important structure for car owners because it protects their vehicles from damage due to weather and keeps car thieves at bay.

In the United Kingdom, the garage was termed as motor house in the early 20th century. Earlier garages had wooden doors, which open as two leaves or slide horizontally. Newer garages had fitted metal doors that open up-and-over. More modern garages have electrically operated doors. Most residential homes have a single or double garage that may either be constructed into the main building or detached within the grounds like in a back garden or communal block. Some garages are no longer used to park a car, but as general storage space.

In the United States, recent garages are generally connected to the nearest road with a driveway and to the interior of a house. Earlier garages were detached and situated in the back yard, accessed through a long driveway or alley. These were separate buildings, which looks like modern sheds. Of course, attached garages are more convenient to have than detached ones. A single family house and town house would normally feature a garage with its door on the side of the building. In other instances, an apartment would be built above the garage. Most doors open upwards using an electric chain drive that is generally remotely controlled from the resident's vehicle through a small radio transmitter. It is normal for American residential garages to house one or two cars. Like in Britain, American residential garages are widely used as storage for tools, bicycles, mowers, and other stuff, as well as for workspace.
