Green Travels for Industries

In the United Kingdom, the new tax and national insurance systems urge employers in different industrial sectors to create travel plans for their workers. A travel plan is a package that aims to reduce use of cars for journeys to and from work or business destinations. Travel benefits like petrol and season tickets are normally taxable. However, there is no tax or national insurance contributions (NICs) to pay if an employer provides free or subsidised transport, cycles and safety equipment, and parking for cycles and motorcycles.

A work bus has a coach seating of 12 or more passengers, while a minibus has a seating of 9 or more. Either or both can be made available to employees to transport them to and from work. Employers can join together in providing a work bus or minibus service for their joint workforces. The vehicles should be used mainly for commuting between workplaces, but employees and their families by use them once in a while for other trips.

An employer with no bus service can provide subsidised public transport to its workers, but it must be made available to all workers to enjoy zero tax or NIC. The employer can provide free or low-interest season ticket loans of up to 5,000 British pounds each year. This has no tax or NIC if the full amount is repaid and total loans outstanding do not exceed 5,000 pounds. Season ticket loans are used to buy tickets for travel by rail, underground, bus, and other approved public transport.

The employer can also lend cycles and cycling protective gear to its workers to aid them in travelling to and from work. A worker may use these tools for leisure as long as it is primarily used for work.
